For 11 Years My Mother Set 4 Plates Every Sunday — Then We Found the Box Under Her Bed

For eleven years, my mother set four places at her Sunday table.

Four plates. Four glasses. Four napkins folded into neat little triangles, the way she learned to fold them as a young bride.

And every Sunday, for eleven years, three of those chairs sat empty.

Her name is Margaret Whitfield. She is seventy-six years old, and she still lives in the small white house on Chestnut Lane in Millbrook, Vermont, where she raised all three of her children.

That house is where this story begins. And I am ashamed to say it is a story about what I almost lost through my own stubbornness.
