He Sold My Mom’s House While I Buried Her — Karma Hit Hard

I came home from my mother’s memorial service to find my mother-in-law smiling on my porch.

She had a pair of keys in her hand. My keys.

I didn’t understand at first. I was still wearing the black dress from the funeral. My eyes were swollen. My heart was shattered into pieces I didn’t think could ever be put back together.

The drive home had been a blur. I remember staring out the car window, watching the Texas landscape roll by, but not really seeing any of it. My mind was still in that hospital room. Still holding my mother’s hand. Still listening to her last breath rattle in her chest.
