I Came Home to Find My Husband’s Ex-Wife Living in My House

I pulled into the driveway of my home on Maple Street, a bag of groceries in my arms, already thinking about what I’d make for dinner. It was late November, and the air bit at my cheeks. The porch light was off, which struck me as odd because I always left it on when I went out. I fumbled for my keys, balancing the bag on my hip.

When I inserted the key into the lock, it didn’t turn. I tried again, wiggling it. Nothing.

Maybe I grabbed the wrong key. I checked. No, it was the right one. But the lock was different. It was shiny, new, a deadbolt I’d never seen before.
