I Locked My Husband Out in the Rain After He Kicked Me Out in the Snow

I came home from the grocery store and found the locks changed.

My own house. The house I had lived in for twenty-three years. The house where I raised our three children, where we celebrated every Thanksgiving and Christmas, where we buried our family dog under the old oak tree in the backyard.

The first thing I noticed was that my key didn’t turn. I tried again, thinking maybe my hands were too cold. The temperature had dropped below freezing, and the wind was biting through my thin coat.

I called my husband Mark. No answer.

I called again. Straight to voicemail.
