The knock came at 2:13 in the morning. Three sharp, frantic blows that sliced through the silence like a scream. I had been lying awake, staring at the ceiling, a strange unease coiled in my chest. When I opened the door, my twin sister collapsed into my arms. Her face was swollen beyond recognition, her lip split, and dark bruises ringed her throat like a grotesque necklace. Her clothes were torn, and her feet were bare and bloody.
“Please don’t make me go back,” she whispered against my shoulder.
I held her as she sobbed, feeling her tremors. I forced myself to stay calm. “You’re safe now.” I led her inside and locked the door. I brought her water, but her hands shook too much to hold the glass.
“Was it Daniel?” I asked.
She flinched. That was answer enough.
Daniel Mercer had always been too charming. He owned a development company, spoke at charity dinners, and smiled for cameras. But I had seen the way he treated waiters, the way he corrected Claire’s sentences like she was a child. I had warned her, but she insisted he was kind. Now I had the proof.
I photographed every bruise. I recorded her whispered statement. Then I called Dr. Lena Ortiz, an emergency physician I trusted. She arrived within the hour.
“This is not the first time,” Lena said after examining Claire. “She needs to stay away from him.”
“I have a plan,” I said.
I called Detective Maya Brooks, my old partner from eight years on the force. We had investigated domestic violence together. She owed me her life after a warehouse raid.
“Get evidence,” Maya said. “I’ll get a warrant.”
So we switched places.
I cut my hair to match Claire’s shoulder-length style. I wore her dress, her wedding ring, even her perfume. She taught me how she walked, how she spoke, the little habits Daniel expected. I practiced her voice until it felt natural.
“He’ll hurt you,” she said.
“I can handle him,” I replied. “You’ve suffered enough.”
Dawn came. Daniel called, demanding her return. I answered in Claire’s voice, apologetic.
“I went for a drive,” I said.
“You have twenty minutes.” He hung up.
I drove to the mansion in her car. My heart hammered, but I forced myself to stay calm. Hidden in my blouse was a body camera and a microphone. Maya’s van was parked two streets away.
Daniel was waiting in the foyer. He wore a navy suit and held a glass of whiskey. His smile was cold.
“You embarrassed me,” he said.
I lowered my eyes. “I’m sorry.”
“Better.”
He circled me. “Where did you sleep?”
“In my car.”
“Liar.” His hand shot out and grabbed my chin. I let myself tremble, but I studied him. His knuckles were bruised.
At breakfast, his partner Victor Hale arrived with documents. Victor glanced at my covered cheek and laughed.
“Still clumsy, Claire?”
“Daniel had to remind me of my manners,” I said.
Victor spread papers on the table. “Once she signs, her trust transfers to Mercer Holdings.”
I understood. Claire had inherited valuable land from our grandmother. Daniel was stealing it.
“I don’t feel well,” I said.
“Sign.” Daniel pushed a pen toward me.
I pretended to study the papers. They contained a forged signature and a backdated notarization.
“I need my reading glasses,” I said.
“You don’t wear glasses,” Victor snapped.
I looked up.
The room froze.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “What did you say?”
Victor stared at me, then at Daniel. “Her scar… it’s different.”
Our childhood scars were similar, but mine curved downward, while Claire’s curved upward. They had noticed.
Daniel grabbed my wrist. “Who are you?”
I smiled. “Too late.”
Victor stood, knocking his chair over. “It’s the sister.”
Daniel struck me across the face. The blow snapped my head sideways, but I stayed standing. I tasted blood.
“Careful,” I said. “You’re on camera.”
His eyes darted to my blouse. He lunged, but I blocked his hand and twisted his wrist. I released him and stepped back.
“The police are already on their way.”
He laughed, uneasy. “You think anyone will believe you?”
“They’ll believe the evidence.”
The front door burst open. Maya and a team of officers stormed in, weapons drawn.
“Daniel Mercer, you’re under arrest for domestic violence and attempted fraud.”
He struggled, but they handcuffed him. Victor was arrested too.
I stood there, shaking. Maya handed me a coat. “It’s over.”
Later, Claire and I watched the news. Daniel’s fortune was frozen. She got her inheritance back. He was convicted and sentenced.
She was finally free.
I looked at my sister, who was smiling through tears.
“I would do it again,” I said. “A thousand times.”
