I Thought My Daughter-in-Law Was Poor. Then I Found Her Tax Return.

The day my world turned upside down started like any other Tuesday.

I was in my garage, working on a 1972 Chevelle that a customer needed running by Friday. Grease under my nails, coffee cold on the workbench. The smell of oil and gasoline was my second language.

Then Karen called out from the kitchen. Her voice had that edge, the one that said company was coming and I better clean up.

I walked in through the back door, wiping my hands on a rag. And there they were. My son Mark, who I haven’t seen in three weeks, sitting at our table with a forced smile. And next to him, Jessica. My daughter-in-law.
