I Was Kicked Out in the Cold Then Karma Hit Hard

The worst night of my life started like any other winter evening in Cincinnati.

Snow was falling heavy. The wind was biting through every crack in the windows. I had just settled into my armchair with a cup of tea and a good book when the phone rang.

It was my son, Mark. His voice sounded strained.

“Mom, our furnace went out. The whole house is freezing. Emma and the kids are shivering. Can we stay with you tonight?”

Of course I said yes. I’m a mother. That’s what mothers do.

Within an hour, they showed up. Mark looked tired. Emma barely looked at me. The kids, Charlie and Lily, ran straight to my arms and I wrapped them in blankets.
