My Best Friend Stole My Daughter’s College Fund—Then I Found Out Her True Identity

I came home from another double shift at the hospital, my feet aching and my back screaming. It was a cold night in February, and all I wanted was to soak in a hot bath and collapse into bed.

But when I opened the front door, I knew something was wrong.

The lights were off, which was unusual because my daughter Emily always left the hallway light on for me. She was a senior in high school, already accepted to the University of Michigan, and she knew I worked late.

I called out her name. No answer.

I checked her room. Empty. Her bed was made, her textbooks stacked neatly on the desk.
