My Best Friend Stole My House—I Exposed Him in a Diner

I came home from the grocery store on a Tuesday afternoon and found my wife, Carol, standing outside our own gate.

She was crying.

Not the quiet, dabbing-at-the-eyes kind of crying. This was the deep, shaking, can’t-breathe kind.

Her hands were trembling as she held a piece of paper. I dropped the groceries and ran to her.

“Carol, what happened?”

She couldn’t speak. She just pointed at the house.

Our house. The one we bought 35 years ago, when James was just a baby. The one where we celebrated every birthday, every Christmas. The one where we held James’s hand during his last days.
