My Boss Maxed Out My Credit Cards. Then I Found The Photo.

I’ll never forget the day Mark called me into his office.

It was a Tuesday. The middle of the afternoon.

The air conditioning was broken, so the whole building felt like an oven.

I was sweating in my cheap polyester blouse.

Mark sat behind his enormous mahogany desk.

He was scrolling through his phone, not even looking at me.

“Karen, sit down,” he said, waving his hand.

I sat on the edge of the chair. I always felt small in that office.

The walls were covered with pictures of him shaking hands with politicians.

He finally looked up. “You’ve been doing good work lately.”
