My Mother-in-Law Maxed Out My Credit Cards and Ruined My Marriage

I married Mark eight years ago. Everyone thought I was the lucky one.

A handsome husband with a good job at a car dealership in Austin, Texas. A beautiful four-bedroom house with a white picket fence. Two sweet children, a boy and a girl.

But they didn’t know the truth.

Mark worked hard, but he didn’t make much. We struggled. We clipped coupons. We bought clothes at thrift stores.

And then there was Linda, his mother. She moved in with us after she retired.

I never wanted that. But Mark insisted.

“Mom needs us,” he would say. “She can’t afford her own place.”
