My Son Locked His Mother Out Of Our Home—And I Taught Him A Lesson That Lasted A Lifetime

I came home from work and found my wife standing outside our own gate, clutching a tiny grocery bag like she had nowhere left to go.

My first thought was that she had stepped out for some fresh air and simply locked herself out by accident. Linda had always been a little forgetful, especially when she was lost in thought about her garden. But as I parked my old Ford truck and stepped out onto the gravel, I realized something was terribly wrong.

The evening sun was dipping low behind the maple trees, casting long shadows across the front lawn where our grandchildren had played just last month. Linda was not moving. She stood frozen at the gate, her fingers wrapped around the iron bars, her face turned away from the house as if she couldn’t bear to look at it.
