My Son Said “Cancel Your Trip, Family Comes First.” After 30 Years, I Finally Said No

At 9:47 on a Tuesday night, I was standing in our bedroom in Boise, Idaho, holding two cardigans in my hands.

Blue in one, gray in the other. I was trying to decide which one to pack for the coast, as if that were the biggest problem left in my entire life.

Eleven hours later, Frank and I were supposed to be on a plane to Oregon.

Our anniversary trip. Thirty-two years of marriage. Seven nights in a rented cottage in Cannon Beach that we had saved five years to afford.

Frank was already in bed, propped up on the pillows with his reading glasses sliding down his nose. He had a yellow highlighter in his hand and the printed itinerary in his lap, marking the dinner reservations we’d made four months earlier.
