Sold My Mom’s House While She Was Dying

I came home from the hospital, still trembling from watching my mother take her last breath, and I found a bright red For Sale sign stabbed into the front lawn of the house I grew up in.

My hands were shaking so badly I nearly drove my pickup into the mailbox.

I sat there in the idling truck, staring at the sign as if it could disappear if I blinked hard enough.

But it didn’t.

The words were perfectly clear: For Sale by Owner, Contact Gary Davenport.

Gary Davenport.

My boss.

The man who owned the construction company where I had worked for twelve years, busting my back for him, skipping holidays, taking on extra shifts because he never let me say no.
